$6,000 fine
for smuggling meat

A 30-year-old Bruneian was fined $6,000 or serve 6 month's jail
in default after pleading guilty to two charges of conveying
uncustomed goods and a charge of having in possession undeclared
items before the Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Asmali Hj Abd Rahman was released on bail after being given
three months to settle the fine by Magistrate Lailatul Zubaidah.
According to Customs Prosecuting Officer, Hj Amran Hj Ibrahim,
the defendant was caught at Junjungan 2 two days ago by patrol
police who were tipped off. They stopped Asmali, who was in a
Honda Civic that was about to exit a junction.
The officers inspected the car and found 9 cartons of 12 kg
boneless chicken flesh and 10 cartons of 21 kg Allana boneless
frozen beef.
The personnel further inspected a hut near the scene and
found 10 more cartons of 21 kg Allana boneless frozen beef.
The defendant was detained for investigation. He said that he
was promised $200 to deliver the goods somewhere in Jalan Babu
Raja by a Chinese man.
The total value of all items was estimated at $2221.
The contraband goods were forfeited by the court to the state
while the vehicle was returned to Asmali. |
