DST officer fined for failure to declare satellite receiver

A DST communications officer who failed to declare a satellite receiver unit that he bought from Surabaya and not having a valid license to import the broadcasting apparatus was yesterday fined to a total of $1,600 or in default four weeks imprisonment by the Bandar Magistrate's Court.

He could be jailed for 12 months and fined $40,000 for failure to make the declaration and imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years and a fine not exceeding $40,000 or both for not having a valid license to import the said apparatus.

The defendant, Kamal Ringgit, 45, who works at the Support Services Unit, pleaded guilty in having failed to declare one unit of Unisat DV3 Digital Satellite Receiver to the Customs officers at the inspection area of the Brunei International Airport hall, which is an offence under section 124 (1)(e) of the Customs Act (Cap 36).

He also admitted to importing the digital satellite without a valid license issued under section 23 of the Broadcasting Act (Cap 180).
